Princess Eugenie just showed Selena Gomez some love on Instagram for the best reason.
Eugenie, who suffered from scoliosis as a child, has a scar on her back from a spinal operation she underwent at 12 years old. On October 10, the royal praised Gomez for showing off her own surgery scar from her 2017 kidney transplant and for speaking out about her growing confidence.
“I thought this was super cool of @selenagomez to show she’s confident of who she is and what she went through after finding it difficult to show her scar,” the princess wrote underneath the photo of Gomez. “Let’s be proud of our uniqueness.”
Gomez posted the original picture in September, posing in a blue bathing suit and extending her leg so that the scar, on the inside of her thigh, is prominently displayed. She wrote at the time, “When I got my kidney transplant, I remember it being very difficult at first showing my scar. I didn’t want it to be in photos, so I wore things that would cover it up. Now, more than ever, I feel confident in who I am and what I went through…and I’m proud of that.”
Princess Eugenie publicly embraced her own scar two years ago, when she married Jack Brooksbank in a stunning gown featuring a deep-V cut in the back. At the time her displaying her scar so visibly on one of the most photographed and publicized days of her life inspired other women to share their own scars online.
Since then, the princess has continued to use Instagram to destigmatize visible scars, reposting pictures from her followers and dedicating a highlight reel to “beautiful scars.”
